Power Play

Mar 15, 2021
At 2:29pm my passenger doors swing open and three kids hustle inside landing with relief in their seats.

“How was school today?” I ask.

I usually get silence or a one word answer which is understandable after a full day of wearing masks and following social distancing rules.

I usually have better luck with asking for a thumbs up, middle or down rating.

After a few minutes in the car, I know I’ll get an answer from my son if I ask what he did at recess.

A smile always creeps onto his face as he begins to tell me the day’s tale of an “epic” football game, fishy fishy (think sharks and minnows), four square or a soccer match. He lights up with excitement telling me all the details.

Do you remember what it feels like to play at recess?

I remember hours of monkey bar swings (I used to hook my knees around the bar and flip off), kick ball, swinging so high on the swings that I could jump off and land on my feet, wind running through my hair, and my best friend laughing by my side.

Even though it’s Covid and even though we’re “adults”, we still need that same element of play in life and with our food.

Can you imagine school/life without recess?

No fun. Two thumbs down.

Can you imagine a life with no play foods? **

Also no fun. Two thumbs down.

** I prefer the phrase play foods over “junk” or “sometimes” foods. I don’t categorize food as junk or give labels to food indicating how much or when I’m allowed to eat them. Better yet, just call a spade a spade- this would mean a life with no cookies, ice cream, cakes or donuts.**

There’s a reason our one year old lines up in the ice cream line after dinner. She wants to be part of the food fun. She also knows how to dance so she can be part of post dinner dance party fun. Whether you’re one or eighty-one, you need to play.

Regardless of your age, diet culture tries to steal your fun. Diets are largely based on a lot of NO FUN rules. That's why it's so important to keep reminding yourself to reject diet mentality in all of its sneaky forms.

This week, I challenge you to plan something fun to do and toss in something fun to eat, too.

Just like our kids would never tolerate school without recess, don’t tolerate your own life without play.

I’ll be back in two weeks so I can enjoy some fun with our family.

xoxo,
