Whoops, they did it again.

Feb 01, 2021

I grabbed my Franklin Covey organizer, colored pens, cup of tea and journal to sit by the fire on New Year's Day. Comfy clothes, a little Cold Play and lots of quiet time to think about and plan the year ahead.

That was like 100 years ago, or at least it feels that way.

I have yet to sit down and have quiet time to plan out my year. Good thing that I don't feel the pressure I used to in having "health", "clean eating" or "weight maintenance/loss" at the top of my goals list.

What tops my list these days is making sure everyone is fed, diapers are changed, kids are dropped off at school drop, kids get to their sports, homeschooling and homework. I barely have time to even read the daily news. Probably not a bad thing considering the ambush of glum news from 2020. The only way I manage the news is with my daily NYT summary and TheSkimm

I was reading my Skimm last week and had an extra 30 seconds to read all the way to the bottom where they have tips/advertisement. And wouldn't you know it, Noom showed up disquised as goal planning.

Noom refers to their goal planning as WOOPS. Whoops is right, Noom, because your marketing team should've done some fact checking before they made this ad.

W stands for "what do you want?"
They don't talk about weight loss, but that's the assumed desire.

O stands for "what obstacles do you anticipate being in your way?"
Here's the big whoopsie, because 95% plus of dieters fail in the long run (2-5 years). That's a pretty big obstacle to overcome if you ask me....not to mention costly and potentially damaging mentally and physically.

P "what's your plan?"
GOOD QUESTION, NOOM!! What's your plan to combat this MASSIVE obstacle? I mean some people are turning up their noses at a vaccine that's 90% effective. DIETS ARE ONLY 2-5% effective, AT BEST. WHY ARE WE STILL GIVING MONEY TO THE DIET INDUSTRY THAT HAS NO EVIDENCE BASED WAY TO SAFELY LOOSE WEIGHT?

Whoops, they did it again. They tried to fool me into thinking that I just needed a little more planning, more will power, more time by the fire with my organizer. Good thing, I recognize this marketing strategy as the brainchild of a zoom room full of millenials virtual high-fiving (maybe they fist bump or maybe they breakout into a tiktok) about their latest ad campaign.

No thanks, NOOM, no thank you. You can keep your WHOOPSIE plan to yourself.

Instead I think I'll try this WOP

WHAT would I do with my time if I wasn't concerned about my weight?

What OTHER experiences would I want to have

What PEOPLE do I want to surround myself with who love me for who I am.

I'm going to dust off that organizer and answer these questions for myself this week. I encourage you to do the same.

xoxo,

PS. Join me in Peace Out Diets where I will teach you many more WOP type tools and strategies so you can finally make peace with food and your body.
