Even NASA scientist can’t help

Dec 12, 2022

My son stopped dead in his tracks in my bathroom doorway.

I did that slow head turn wondering what absurdity might be hitting his little eye balls.

“Um, mom, what are you doing?”

I had to stop for a minute because I was now used to the little buzzing coming from my hand held face mister device.

“Oh, this?!” I questioned as I pointed to my handy micro-infuser (If I’m being exact with my terminology).

”Yeah, what the heck is that thing?”

”It’s supposed to get the stuff I put on my face into the deepest layers of my skin so it feels and looks extra soft like yours.”

”Oh, okay. Well it looks and sounds really weird. Can I go play outside?”

Sometimes all it takes is your ten year old pointing out the obvious. Was this little NASA funded and backed device really going to make me look that much different? Probably not. Is the beauty industry a kissing cousin of the diet industry? Absolutely, yes.

Is the beauty industry constantly trying to sell you on the best and fastest and most effective way to look younger? Is the beauty industry selling you solutions for regular stuff that just happens to humans like dry skin, acne, oily skin and wrinkles? Is the beauty industry filled with so-called experts who all know better than you? You betcha, as my Wisconsin friends would say.

After that brief little interaction, I was done with this twice daily 60 second skin promise. Even though the company sent me a new machine after it broke once within the first month, I realized that this little face blaster wasn’t going to save my soul and it was kind of annoying to deal with the device, the charger and the monthly capsules supply.

I listed it on ebay and a happy buyer is now “rocketing” herself to younger skin. Or at least feeling like she is….

I was annoyed that I’d fallen prey to the same marketing crap that the diet industry uses like fear and shame. Why did I believe that these NASA experts had found the answer? Maybe I thought that if they can get us to the moon, they must be able to fix my wrinkles! It’s easy to WANT to believe in the magic given that we all live in a world that’s bombarding us to look thinner and younger while the fashion industry tries selling my pre-teen on crop tops that make her look older.

The truth is, there is no cure for being a human with a changing body and skin. Don’t get my wrong, I’m still going to use my face creams, just not ten of them and no fancy (aka expensive) devices. You do you when it comes to what you want to do with your face- Botox, filler, you name it. Just use these things knowing that there’s no miracle cure and aging, changing bodies are still beautiful.
