Elsa is making a come back at our house

Nov 22, 2021

Just when I thought my days of belting out “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen were long gone, our one year old has fallen prey to this cult classic. Nearly everyone you know has at least part of, if not all of, this song memorized. Just in case you need a refresher….

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don’t care
What they’re going to say

Aaaaaand we’re back to 2013 just like that. It’s fitting to sing this song around this time of year and all year, really. Mind Body Monday's anti-diet journey in a nutshell is all about Letting. It. Go.
Letting go of society’s unrealistic ideals of beauty and thinness.
Letting go of trying to control your body size (we’re animals, after all).
Letting go of worrying about what other people think about your choices around food and body.
Letting go of trying to control your food.

When you’ve been on this journey for a while, you don’t run down the beach naked shouting how much you love your fat rolls. Well you could, of course, but even if you do, it’s probably not an everyday desire. You do, however, gain some perspective that a starved mind can’t access.
Perspective like your sanity is worth more than being a victim to your own diet brutality.
Perspective like your precious time and money aren’t going to be wasted on physically and emotionally harming yourself if the name of the diet Gods Jenny, WW, IF and so many more.
Perspective that your life is so much better without the constant chatter of food and body fears.

Sing this part of the song if you need a little reminder:
It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all

What will your holiday season look like if you channel your inner Elsa? What freedom and joy can you experience when you aren’t shackled by diet culture’s grip?

What would happen if you made the conscious choice to just let it go?
To instead stop and breathe.
To relax around food.
To forget about all the rules, shoulds and supposed to’s around food.
To really appreciate that there isn’t right or wrong when it comes to food.
To enjoy the connection with your loved ones for the first time in two years.

Let’s head out on this high note:
It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
I’m free

That’s right, you can finally be free.

PS. I’m so thankful for you, dear reader, for being on this journey with me.
If you know someone who needs a weekly nudge towards food peace, forward this message so we can free more friends from diet misery.
